I'm fixing a Replicator 2 for a friend who was having problems with it. After cleaning the stepstruder I have managed a few small prints at 0.2mm layer thickness.

Looking to the future and having had a few issues with the hothead does the Replicator 2 use a MK8 stepstruder as there is an obvious evil money grabbing difference between parts for the Replicator 2 and generic parts.

eg would this likely be correct

    Help to get me started

Hi everyone. so, i have a replicator 2. i now understand that it only reads .x3g files so im trying to do a few things. firstly i need software thats compatable with this model and software that can convert an stl file to a x3g file. it seem ridiculaous that ive downloaded several applications and still can not find something that will work. I am completely new to this so apologies if this is a really simple thing to asking. I have files i need to print and im getting so frustrated. The latest makerbot...

  • Which software to use for my printer and some other beginners question

First of all hello, I am new to 3D printing!

My company bought a 3D printer to print cases for an Arduino device.

Right now we are still in the phase off getting to know the printer, which settings to use and which software should be used aswell.

    The printer was bought here(

Our main problem is using the right software. Right now we are using MakerBot Desktop.

The program itself is okay, but we have no...

The Design Spot at the Sacramento Public Library's Arcade branch has a 5th Gen Makerbot Replicator and I would suggest staying away from any of the units that use their Smart Extruder. They've had it about six months now and gone through three extruders just trying to keep it working. It frequently stops during the print process due to either thinking that the filament is jammed or it believes it is out of filament. I have looked at the insides of the Smart Extruder and think there's too long a...

For the most part the 5th Gen Replicator is an amazing machine. I have found that the standard profiles that Makerbot has on the Desktop soft\ware are actually not all that great, I have reverted to using the custom profile setup and running at settings that fit the products being used for the prints. The Smart Extruder I have found is in my opinion the weakest link in this printer. I have officially gone through 2 that have failed after about 400 hours printing.... All in all i am pleased with...

    Makerbot or Ultimaker thought needed

    Hi All,

New to the site but not the additive world as I have been working in the commercial space for about 10 years now.

I would like some opinions on two of the starter systems out there, Makerbot and Ultimaker. I am leading a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) effort for our elementary school and have narrowed my choice of machines to these two (mostly for safety and ease of use).

My question is do I go with one of these: Replicator...

Found some great info here with a possible upgrade but also very useful confirmation of Replicator 2 parts.

I must say for such an expensive machine there are some pretty crappy bits. The build plate leveller is a total piece of junk ! Also the number of dead links that point to various info's etc on the makerbot site is a joke.

    skirts in Makerware 2.4?

I recently bought a CTC Bizer dual extruder printer, which is basically a clone of the Makerbot Replicator Dual. SO far I have had the best luck using an older version of Makerware (2.4.1), but I was wondering if it is possible to generate skirts with it. I see rafts as an option, but I have not had much luck with them. I have used skirts with my other printer (Mendel90) and had good luck with them, but my favorite slicer programs, Slic3r and Cura, don't generate the .X3G code format the Bizer/Makerbot...

    replied to Raft issues
It depends on which printer you are using. You said you have a Replicator 2X and an UP Plus 2. I believe each of those uses their own proprietary software. Usually, the raft settings would be an advanced feature. You many need to enable an "expert" or "advanced" mode to see them. The actual setting would be called something like "first layer distance" or "air gap."

Looks like in Makerbot Desktop they call it "Raft Model Spacing." Check...
