    Filament extrusion device feedback

    Hi All,

    I am new to the site, but not the world of 3D printing. Several other engineers and myself are looking to design and build our own filament extruder. The goal being to improve on those already on the market. I am looking for any feedback from printer owners who would possibly be interested in a device like this, or just if any one has general thoughts or ideas. Any feedback is helpful! What would you be willing to pay for a device like this?

    Purposed device functionality:
    - Extrude with variety or materials + colors
    - Extruded cross section variable but consistent and repeatable
    - Shredding attachment to re-use support material and old parts
    - Timing system for extrusion to mimic printer feed (only extrude filament when needed for printing)
    - no need to store spools of filament

    Hi, Nick. Welcome to the forum! Personally, I don't mind using spools and haven't tried extruding my own filament from scraps such as support. What does sound interesting to me is the "extrude on demand" option for extruding only enough to keep up with the printer. Seems like this would be difficult to do, but could be handy.

      I don't know this is a problem with all or most printers, but it certainly is a bother with my Wanhao Duplicator i3.

      Very high up on my wish list is a simple, foolproof way to withdraw filament without clogging the extruder, thus requiring a dismantle to clear it.

      Recently I've wanted to repeatedly pause a print, change the filament to a different colour, and continue the print. Withdrawing the hot filament is the tricky part. Just one instance of a clogged extruder and everything you've printed so far is wasted.

      Is this a common problem or does it only apply to cheaper printers?
