It all comes down to personal preferences... However, there are a lot of free alternatives out there. Autodesk 123D has a suite of free tools. You can even use Sketchup. There are lots of other free options TinkerCAD is just one other...
Like I said, it is more of a preference and what works for you.
I'll throw one more in here. DesignSpark Mechanical is a free, easy-to-use direct modeling program. Works great! Maybe start with Tinkercad or Sketchup as applekeith suggested and then move to AutoDesk 123D or DesignSpark Mechanical when you need more advanced functionality.
