    Extruder heating fails immediately

    I am working with an prusa i3 v2 and am having trouble heating the extruder. Seems to kill the print after less than 10 seconds of trying to heat it up. Any ideas what the problem could be? Very much a noob here. Thanks.

    What does it exactly do? Does the machine shut down? Does the heater turn off?

      It will heat for less than 10 seconds and then stop the print with an error in the console.

      Heating failed, system stopped! heater_id: 0
      Printer halted. Kill() called

      It then has to be reset.

        Check all the wiring and use a multi meter maybe change the heater cartridge

          Yeah pretty much. Wire check time. It could even be a loose connection and not necessarily bad.

            Connections seem to be tight and there is no sign of needing to change the cartridge... should I replace anyway?

            How would I use the multimeter to trouble shoot? Any beginners YouTube videos to start a newbie off. I believe the board is an Arduino.

              Do you have an extra heater? If so swam it out to test.

                When you say heater do you mean extruder? The whole unit? Guess I should get both extruder and cartridge.

                  I am not familiar with the Prusa but I was referring to just the heater. If you can buy extra parts. 30/30/40. Print 40% of the time, maintenance 30%, repair 30%. Welcome to 3D printing. lol

                    Check if any of the lead of the thermocouple is grounded and also check whether any of the electrical connections are loose. Generally, a loose connection could lead to variable heating of the extruder.

                      I can confirm that this is the heater. I had this issue happen to one our printers. One of the heater wires was exposed to rubbing against a sharp metal edge. It would cause issues intermittently. Change out the heater and/or wires.
