Do I need to download firmare?

I am new to 3D printing. I purchased a Wanhao Duplicator I3. I have downloaded the recommended Repetier-Host software. When I plugged the printer into my laptop with Windows 7 I received a message that a driver was being downloaded.

Repetier-Host has firmware that I can download but do I need it?

Any help would be appreciated as this is pretty overwhelming and instructions from Wanhao are a little scarce.

I personally would not replace the firmware unless what you have is not working for you.
If I replace it I have no idea if I will end up with a very expensive brick or not.

If you need to I would get a backup of what you have now. In case it's worse after. You can then go back to what you had.

Replacing the firmware is not a simple task. Unless you get it from the manufacturer, I wouldn't suggest it as a first course of action. Since you purchased the printer, have you contacted the manufacturer? I would probably start there. They are usually pretty good at making sure the firmware has been installed properly. There may be other options for you.

First you should start getting into printing and basically max out what is possible with the firmware that is on there. Only then, if you have a problem for example with the look of a print and you know what to tweek in the firmware, then I would go ahead and look into getting firmwares (marlin/repetier) and customizing it to the printers and your needs. But as mentioned already by the others, when going that way you first need to know what firmware you are using.
