Dremel, filament coming out of the extruder while preheating

    Hi there!

I am pretty new to 3d printing und just purchased a Dremel 3D printer. The printer works just fine except for the mac software to constantly segfault. This can, however, be circumvented by using a Windows vm.

My current problem is that the filament comes out of the extruder while preheating resulting in a small spaghetti ball that is then sticking to the platform after the printing begins. Cleaning the extruder slightly before the preheating finishes is somewhat helping but in my opinion not a perfect solution. I am using the factory settings and the Dremel filament.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    What software are you using?

You can home the Axis before starting to heat it up, so that the the "blob" is outside of your printing area. Just do not home the Z Axis when the nozzle is cold. You may also want to add some custom start code that cleans the nozzle a little bit if possible with that printer. On one of my printer for example I move the nozzle to a position where I can easily clean it with tweezers before it starts the print.

Unfortunately, the Dremel uses a proprietary file format and thus requires a proprietary software "Dremel3D". Seems I have to stick with my "well-timed-cleaning" workaround.

You could look into using Simplify3D instead of the proprietary software. Looks like Dremel is on the list of supported printers. I recently picked up a copy of Simplify to get around the limitations of proprietary software on one of my own printers. There are a bunch of users here that give it rave reviews. You can customize every aspect of printing and the slicing algorithms are much better then most other proprietary software that comes with the printers.

          Hey Andrew!

Testing Simplify3D was already on my agenda. After finally doing it I am pretty impressed. It works well with my Dremel and allows me to adjust everything I will ever need. After changing the skirt settings to a larger offset and 3 outlines the timing of the manual cleaning of the extruder is not important any more. I love it.

Glad to hear, Patrick! I have done similar things with a skirt for my printers. That leaves all blobs and strings from pre-heating at the skirt and the print comes out really clean. Now that you have the software issues worked out, is the hardware pretty solid? Are you getting good, consistent prints from it?

              Hi Andrew,

I must admit that I was completely inexperienced in 3d printing before buying the Dremel, so I don't really have any comparison. Till now there are only some small problems that I have not solved yet. When using the "high" setting (both in the Dremel and in Simplify 3D software) the skirt and sometimes the first layer do not stick (the Dremel does not have a heated platform). So I sometimes have to quickly remove the skirt to avoid the extruder dragging it. On the medium and fast setting I get a nearly perfect skirt and prints. Using a third party filament also works if you work around the problem that the spools don't fit in the Dremel case.

I have attached a photo of two test prints. The left one is done using the Dremel 3D software, the right one with Simplify3D, both high setting and a non-Dremel Filament (eSUN 3D PLA @ 220°C).

I'd say that's a pretty large improvement for just a software change! As far as the first layer not sticking on high settings, you could look at adjusting the first layer thickness setting in Simplify. Could be that it is a bit too close to the platform and not able to extrude enough filament for good adhesion.
