I've begun having a problem getting the first layer of my prints down lately. When printing the first layer, there is a clicking sound that comes from the extruder and then there's a corresponding "miss" on the print bed. Is this a sign of a clogged nozzle?
I tend to find if the clicking is only on first layer the issue is that the nozzle is too close to the bed for the first layer. So needs recalibrating.
Think about it if you are trying to put down a 0.2mm layer (or less) and the nozzle is only 0.1mm from bed then the extruder will struggle to extrude the amount of plastic required for a 0.2mm layer.
If it clicks after the first layer then take nozzle apart and ensure is clean, replace nozzle if damaged or worn. Check hobbed gear is not worn and is clean and tension springs are not too tight or loose.
Sorry for asking a question and disappearing, things have been busy and I haven't had much time to devote to my printer. Thanks for all of the replies.
My first layer extruding problems have snowballed quite a bit... I ended up swapping in a new nozzle, but didn't tighten the barrel, heat block, and nozzle together enough, so plastic started oozing out of the top and bottom of the heat block. Ended up shearing the barrel in half when trying to tighten it, then ended up stripping out the threads in the heat block trying to get the tiny piece of barrel out of it. Ordered new parts, (fortunately all inexpensive and now I have multiple backups of everything) and got it reassembled. Was getting the new nozzle assembly leveled to the print bed, ended up homing everything while the Y-axis cable was where it wasn't supposed to be. That yanked out one of the leads to the heat bed when it got caught up on itself. Now I need to take the bed off so I can solder the lead back in place. Hopefully that will be the end of my misadventures, but I'm not holding my breath. Once I get everything back in order I'll go through all of your suggestions and report back with what I find. Thanks again.
