My print bed doesn't seem to be even, I can have the right clearance at the corners but the middle seems a little higher, also there are spots dotted around which seem higher. Would the best solution here be to clip on a glass bed, or would that still follow the imperfect contour? The bed is not currently heated, but I plan to heat it in the future.

What printer have you got?
ive got an Ultimaker 2+ and found that I had one of a bad batch of glass plates.
they are visibly bowed and using a steel ruler made it even more evident that it wasn't flat.
saying that it's never going to be perfectly flat but if you have a deviation of 0.6mm then that's a big issue when printing at 0.1 mm res.

acrylic bed would be a bad idea even the carriage as well but the bed should be metal or glass especially if its heated a 1/4'' glass plate works well also check extruder calibration and try higher and lower temps each roll of filament is different try printing a cable chain stl and experiment with settings esp temp till you get a good print then label roll with settings and if using a parts cooling fan lower its speed to nil and print that part you posted
